Purpose: It is well recognized in the field of speech-language pathology that getting a job either partially or solely focused on voice and upper airway disorders is competitive and sometimes elusive. This clinical focus article is intended to support the experienced speech-language pathologist (SLP) with limited voice and upper airway experience and hiring SLP manager by providing a framework to develop voice and upper airway competencies.

Method: Topics ranging from acknowledging and elevating previous experience, considerations around onboarding and mentorship, to reinforcing the value and necessity of evidence-based practice will be covered.

Conclusions: Considering SLPs with diverse clinical backgrounds brings different voices/viewpoints to this work. The provided framework can give experienced SLPs interested in voice and upper disorders along with hiring managers a pathway for the development of competencies and mentorship through this process.
